Hello Alaska

Miles Traveled: 312 Miles (Beaver Creek, Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska)

Okay, I will be honest.  We haven't made it all the way to Fairbanks.  We are staying twenty miles south of the city at Eielson Air Force Base.  And I feel the need to make a PSA to all those eligible to take advantage of these military lodging facilities.  We are staying in a three story duplex that has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, free laundry, a fenced in yard, and a garage.  If you are traveling, have a military connection, and there is a base near by, you are silly not to stay there.  Not only are the rates WAY less than the local hotels but you also have access to the commissary and the other benefits of the base.  Alright, I'll get off my soap box now.

So, after we left Pete we only had 30 kilometers to go to the US border.  The drive went smoothly and we were able to make good time.

Even with our repaired tire there are some areas on the road that you have to be careful of, regardless of whether you have four good tires or not.  There are areas that are covered in gravel and create a lot of dust, there are major curves with no guard rails, animals in the road, and there is a phenomenon called frost heaving.  These rolling hills can make your stomach drop but can also do series damage if you are driving too fast.

The Alaska Range can be seen as you make your way along the highway.  These snow capped beauties looked painted in the distance.  We entered our new home state on a beautiful day with the weather a crisp 63 degrees.  A few times as we were driving there were still areas of snow in the ditches and patches of ice on the rivers and lakes that were still thawing.  Even with the cool temperature the locals were walking around in shorts and flip flops.  It's all relative.

We picnicked today in Tok, Alaska.
Adam found this phrase sketched into our table.
It was pretty fitting.  I think I'll love it!
