Rushmore and Custer State Park

Miles Traveled: 0 (Rapid City, South Dakota)

We spent our day off from traveling exploring the Black Hills region of South Dakota.  Our first stop, Mt. Rushmore.  This iconic landmark was pretty impressive to see.  We got our first glimpse of these men as we rounded the corner entering the park.  But standing under them inspired us to want to share our heritage with Jack.  Of course, he was more concerned with his "Ninja Skills" as we walked the trail.  However, when quizzed in the car, he was able to list three of the four presidents portrayed.

Our next stop was a drive through Custer State Park.  As you enter the park you are given the option to drive through an 18 mile wildlife loop.  The park is home to a herd of 1,300 bison.  At the entrance gate, the ranger informed us that buffalo had been spotted within a couple miles of the entrance to the loop.  Woohoo, just what we had hoped to hear.

Once again, I won the prize on spotting the wildlife first.  As we rounded a curve, roaming on the plains to our left was a massive herd of buffalo.  It was awesome to see.  The calves ran after their mothers and they all moved slowly while dining.  You can see in the photo below that they were in the process of shedding their winter coats.  These animals were breath-taking.

Along the wildlife loop we ran into the what the park called their friendly burros.  This described these animals perfectly.  However, I am sure it had something to do with some tourists feeding them apples and carrots from their cars.  We also saw Mule Deer and Prarie Dogs (which I spotted too).
